Train the Trainer

‘Your opportunity to train the UK’s workforce and be recognised
as part of an exclusive group of trainers within your occupational field’

It’s all about delivering future ‘Emerging Skills’ now!

The Emerging Skills Project is a pilot programme which forms part of the UK Government’s transformation of further and technical education in England. The Department for Education, through the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, is piloting a collaborative project to develop cutting edge learning materials and train technical trainers in the delivery of Emerging Skills. At this stage, the project focuses on four main areas:

  •         Electrification for vehicles and transport solutions
  •        Additive Manufacturing technologies
  •         Industrial Digitisation Technologies / Industry 4.0 for manufacturing
  •     Composites – for environmental energy systems

What learning materials are being developed?

We’ve been working with the industries above in collaboration with research and educational specialists to define and create training unit(s) (usually one to two days of training) that will equip the current and future workforces with the skills they need.

The model is that each training unit is developed once, but then delivered multiple times by others to suit local employer requirements & demand.

Can I deliver these Training Units?

Subject to eligibility, yes, you can! Training Units are designed to be delivered through the network of Institutes of Technology (IoTs), Colleges and Training Providers across the country and there’s a Train the Trainer course for each Training Unit. Therefore, if you work in one of these establishments in a training role you should be eligible and, through the project funding, we’ll also pay your employer for each day you attend!

The three-step process is explained in the diagram below.

So, how do I sign up to Train the Trainer?

Step 1 – Application

We are offering Train the Trainer course for each Training Unit, the schedule of delivery of which can be found here on Eventbrite.

Anyone working within an IoT, college or Training Provider delivering training in the relevant occupational area as can sign up for one of the places on Train the Trainer. All we need to see is that you are delivering at a similar level currently and have experience in teaching. If you are, it’s highly likely you’ll be offered a place (subject to availability).

Note – if you are not offered a place on Train the Trainer, you will be offered an opportunity to attend a course / unit for free as CPD as part of the pilot delivery.

Step 2 – Train the trainer delivery

The Train the Trainer course for each Training Unit includes access to the training materials ahead of a training session (usually half to a full day) delivered by the team who developed the Training Unit. Through this training, you’ll be able to explore how the Training Unit can be delivered (pedagogy) and the technical aspects of the content.

Ahead of the course you’ll be asked to self-assess to inform the delivery team of any aspects you need to explore further.

At the end of the course you’ll get to experience the same assessment that your future delegates will, thus enabling you to confirm your own understanding.

The Trainer will then be able to deliver the Training Unit at their own IoT, with a member of the Emerging Skills team in attendance to observe and support.

Step 3 – Maintaining Skills Currency

Industry, technology, and training methods are advancing continuously, and a key part of this Train the Trainer programme is ensuring those trainers involved are continually updated through:

  • Industry updates
  • Networking and sharing best practice
  • Training materials updates
  • Technical master classes
  • Pedagogical updates
  • Manufacturer updates

Trainers who have attended Train the Trainer will be able to attend Skills Currency Sessions as part of a national network group within the High Value Manufacturing Catapult centres. This will give Trainers access to these world class facilities where a combination of updates by experts in their field, peer to peer networking and a range of other activities will ensure you remain at the forefront of training delivery in your specialism.

The diagram below shows the range of activities that will form each Skills Currency Session:

Is there any other support for me or my IoT, college or Training Provider as part of the Emerging Skills programme?

Yes, once you’ve been through the Train the Trainer you’ll be ready to deliver the Training Units to local employers. We’ll already have supplied you with all the materials for delivery and we’ll also provide support through the following:

Eventbrite booking service – We’ll promote the Training Unit delivery through Eventbrite and handle the booking process for delegates, all we’ll need to know is when and where you’ll be delivering.

Funding for pilot delivery – We’ve managed to access funding to support your first ‘pilot’ delivery and your IoT will be able to invoice us (at an agreed day rate) to cover your costs.

Support for your pilot delivery – We’ll attend your first pilot delivery session to provide support and guidance.

Collation of learner feedback – We’ll survey all learners attending the Training Unit delivery and send you the collated feedback for your own review. We’ll also use the feedback to update learning materials, so you don’t have to.

Ongoing support – As many of Training Unit will be delivered virtually via Teams/Zoom we can observe live or recorded delivery of units to provide feedback and support where needed.
